The neonatal respiratory care continuum

Our neonatal respiratory care continuum covers a range of respiratory solutions for premature newborns, from birth to 28 days of life.
Hospital areas may include labor and delivery rooms (DRs), neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) and special care baby units (SCBUs).
Resuscitation

The aim of newborn resuscitation is to establish effective spontaneous breathing or assist ventilation of the lungs within the first few minutes of life.

Invasive ventilation

Invasive ventilation is a mode of respiratory support that replaces spontaneous breathing in neonates with an artificial airway such as an endotracheal tube.

CPAP

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is a mode of noninvasive respiratory support that provides a continuous distending pressure throughout the respiratory cycle to spontaneously breathing patients.

Nasal high flow

Nasal high flow (NHF) is a mode of noninvasive respiratory support that delivers high flows of blended air and oxygen through a nasal cannula.

There is a body of evidence supporting the use of both CPAP and NHF in the NICU.
